How to help your pet survive fireworks Halloween is nearly upon us and unfortunately for many dog owners it is a time they dread This is because many dogs are very fearful of fireworks. The good news is there is a way to manage this phobia. Hooligans start their fire-working well before and also continue after Halloween. A frightened dog may easily bolt in his panic and should never be left outside or even let outside without a lead! Each year dogs go missing. Another suggestion is to leave the dogs with family or friends or a good boarding kennels in the country. In Ireland, the fireworks are mostly exploded in built-up areas, and country areas are safe. Preparation in advance Keep your pet indoors with all windows closed with heavy black-out curtains. Make a den for your dog to make them feel safe Encourage your dog to use the den and make it a fun place, e.g., provide treats, toys, etc. Provide food and water Some dogs will tolerate ear plugs (please ensure any cotton or wool plugs are removed afterwards) Start using a DAP diffuser plug-in* in the environment (helps comfort dogs in stressful environment and makes them feel safe and secure) at least two weeks ahead of time. Use Feliway plug-in diffuser for cats. *D.A.P. Dog Appeasing Pheromone Electric Diffuser [Available in our shop] Other homeopathic or sedative treatments may also help please ask the vet or nurse for details. However if preparation is started well in advance as above it should prove successful. Preparation on the Day Take out for a long walk before any fireworks start Give large meal to help make them sleepy Play familiar music with a definite beat Check DAP Diffuser is plugged in and on and your dog is in his den Do not pet or cuddle your dog if he gets nervous; instead act in a happy upbeat manner. Another calm dog may help soothe him Happy Halloween
