Classic Welsh tale revived for TV feature

WALES’ most famous four legged hero is to star in a Disney-style
cartoon fairytale to be premiered on Christmas Day.
Caernarfon firm Griffilms have used the latest animation techniques
to produce a half-hour feature: Gelert, to be broadcast on S4C.
It tells the tale of the fearless wolfhound Gelert and his master,
the 13th Century Welsh prince, Llywelyn the Great.
The latest state-of-the-art animation techniques have been used to
bring to life the imaginary world of the Middle Ages.
It is voiced by a stageful of Welsh actors, including John Ogwen.
A real life Irish wolfhound lends his ‘bark’ to Gelert.
“Many of us are familiar with the Gelert story,” says Hywel
Griffith, managing director of Griffilms.
“But I believe we’ve succeeded in giving the story a new perspective
and a modern appeal.”
The film is given a contemporary context with a wraparound story of
a young boy and his dog, with the tale narrated by his grandfather,
Taid, voiced by John Ogwen.
At the end the story gets an unexpected twist.
But viewers will have to wait until Christmas Day to find out
exactly what happens.
The script has been written by Mei Jones, whose previous credits
include S4C’s hit comedy series C’mon Midffîld.
The musical score was composed for the film by Jody Jenkins, under
the watchful eye of his father, the world-famous composer Dr Karl
Jenkins OBE.
The score is performed by the Bulgarian Symphony Orchestra, Côr
Eifionydd choir and the singer Siân James.
It took a painstaking 18 months to finish the animated movie, which
includes 600 camera scenes and 450,000 individual frames.
