Lifeguards Rescue 135-lb Dog, Owner

SAN DIEGO, January 28, 2007 - An Irish wolfhound who got caught in a rip current off Ocean Beach, and the dog's owner, who tried to save the 135-pound pooch, both had to be rescued by lifeguards Sunday.

The dog was in the water off Ocean Beach when it got swept out to sea, and the dog's owner, Susan DeBourcy, went after her pet.
The two were able to make it to a nearby jetty and remained there until San Diego lifeguards paddled out to help them.

Both DeBourcy and the 13-month-old dog were wet and cold, but otherwise unharmed.

Lifeguards said that dog rescues are rare at San Diego beaches, and advised pet owners to always keep their animals on a leash while at the beach.
