At the March Committee Meeting, our Rescue Secretary Cathriona Hartley reported our first successful placement of a ‘rescue’ dog.

“In the first week of February 2007, I received a telephone call from Linda Gover who knew of an Irish Wolfhound in need of help.

“The dog is about five years old and was being kept outside at the back of a house.  A sister in the family was coming to feed the dog as the young man who owned him had moved to Wexford and left the dog behind.  He said he loved the dog but had not enough time for him.  The man’s mother was of the same mind so the dog lived out back and had only human contact when being fed.

“A woman who had seen the dog when she walked by the house with her IW (bought from Linda Gover) spoke to the young man and made him see the logic in getting his dog a good home.   He and his family let her take the dog.  But on returning home she soon noticed that her own hound didn’t take to the new dog in the house, so a new home was required.

“After I spoke to Linda, I emailed and telephoned many people regarding the dog.  In the end, only 36 hours later, Jim and Caroline Griffin came to the rescue.  Both are members of our Society and live in Dunmore East. They have two female hounds, several children and a backyard that leads onto a beach.

Finn, as he is now named, is living as he should, enjoying family life.  His coat has come on, but his face is so grey he looks like a much older dog.  He is fabulous with the kids and other dogs.

“Well done to all involved.”
